The Newmarket Festival were delighted to receive the news that Newmarket’s Laureate Primary Academy had won the School of the Year Award at the West Suffolk Sports Awards held last week at Tattersalls. The Exning Road school became the first in Suffolk to achieve the School Games’ Platinum Mark in July, and is one of only 300 schools in the country to have received the accolade, having achieved five consecutive gold marks.
Head teacher David Perkins said the school was delighted to receive the award which recognised the work of the staff over the past seven years to raise the profile of school sport and PE. A large part of this initiative comes from the Golden Mile, a project that the Festival committee gave its support to earlier in the year with a £5,000 grant for its refurbishment. The initiative helps to encourage children to run an all weather 200m track in return for wristbands, which are collected and contribute toward a team total.
